Child Abuse during Economic Recession 

Nobody enjoys reading about the topic of child abuse, and nobody reads about it simply because they find it interesting. But, if you work in the child care industry, you have to read about it, because recognizing the signs of child abuse is part of your job! Moreover, anyone who cares about the safety and wellbeing of children--no matter where they work or live--should be aware of a disturbing study published recently in the Journal of Pediatrics.


Our nation is experiencing challenging economic times. Roughly 46 million Americans now live in poverty, which is more than at any time since the Census Bureau started gathering data on poverty some 52 years ago. Millions are unemployed, and many millions more are underemployed and barely scraping by. Unfortunately, rates of child abuse are also on the rise.


The study (which you can read about in detail later in this newsletter) tracked incidents of a specific type of injury, abusive head trauma, in children under age 5, and concluded that there was an alarming general increase in child abuse and neglect since the start of the economic recession.

Child Abuse Rose During Recession

Chicago - An increase in child abuse, mostly in infants, is linked with the recent recession in new research that raises fresh concerns about the impact of the nation's economic woes.


The results are in a study of 422 abused children from mostly lower-income families, known to face greater risks for being abused, and the research involved just 74 counties in four states. But lead author Dr. Rachel Berger of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh said the results confirm anecdotal reports from many pediatricians who've seen increasing numbers of shaken baby cases and other forms of brain-injuring abuse.

Online Child Care Training Courses Receive Approval in North Dakota 

ChildCare Education Institute is proud to announce the approval of courses by the Growing Futures Professional Development Registry to provide online child care training to North Dakota's child care and education professionals. North Dakota child care professionals are required to take training approved by the Growing Futures Registry in order to meet annual licensing requirements. Training becomes Registry-approved after receiving an approval notification and code from the Registry. In addition to the approved professional development courses, ChildCare Education Institute's CDA Certificate program may be used to fulfill the education requirements for the CDA National Credentialing Program required by the Council for Professional Recognition. New Online "Fit for Life" Child Care Training Course  

CCEI is proud to announce the addition of HLTH103: Fit for Life. While diet plays a crucial role in a child's health, physical activity (or lack thereof) is really at the root of the rising childhood obesity rates in the United States. Vigorous play on the playground or in high-intensity games is one way for children to get some of the exercise they need, and consistent, sustained light to moderate physical activity is the key to good health in childhood and beyond. This intermediate-level course provides strategies for incorporating movement activities across the entire curriculum, so that light to moderate movement becomes a regular consideration when planning and facilitating activities in the early childhood environment. Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive 0.2 CEUs and the ability to print and/or save their certificate of completion immediately.

In Support of the President's Anti-Bullying Campaign and "National Bullying Prevention Month," CCEI Offers Online Course to Early Care Educators   

CCEI offers new users the trial course GUI100: Bullying in the Preschool Environment at no cost in October. Educators, policymakers, social workers, parents, and victims continue to speak out against the detrimental effects of bullying, and the President has joined in by launching the federal Stop Bullying campaign. While sincere, public efforts to curtail bullying have been launched in schools from the elementary to the college level, many experts have pointed to the fact that bullying can begin in early childhood. Early childhood educators have an important opportunity and responsibility to create a positive social environment that teaches children appropriate social interactions. CCEI's course GUI100 identifies types of bullying, along with its signs and effects, and strategies for creating a bully-free environment. GUI100 is available at no cost to account holders with an active, annual individual or center-based subscription. Without a subscription, this course may be purchased individually through online enrollment at www.cceionline.edu.  

LaTricia Hillman

Congratulations to LaTricia Hillman for successfully completing CCEI's Child Development Associate and Director's Certificate programs of study!

LaTricia's career in early childhood began when she started babysitting at age eleven. She went on to become a camp counselor, nanny, and preschool teacher. She enjoys taking her class outside for a variety of activities and is motivated by watching children accomplish new things. The afternoon is her favorite time of day with the children, and she loves incorporating instruction while they play.


After her daughter was born, LaTricia decided to get her CDA. After completing CCEI's CDA program of study, she went on to receive her credential from the Council of Professional Recognition. LaTricia has also recently completed CCEI's Director's Certificate program. She plans to continue her education by acquiring her Associate of Applied Science in ECE from Sinclair Community College, and later her Bachelors in ECE from the University of Dayton with a minor in Business. One day, LaTricia would like to own her own preschool.


In her free time, LaTricia enjoys reading, going on walks, and playing on the playground with her own two children. LaTricia would recommend CCEI to anyone and says, "When I decided that I was going back to school for my CDA, I was a first-time mother of a six-month-old and going back to work. CCEI understood that school was not my only priority and they helped me stay on top of my classes so I did not fall behind. After I was finished with my classes, my education coach emailed me to see if I needed any help on the next steps to receiving my CDA and she answered all my questions. Even from 700 miles away I felt supported from start to finish. They are a great support when starting for the first time or starting over!"

Online CDA Coursework
CCEI's Online CDA Certificate programs of study meet the clock-hour training requirement of The Council for Professional Recognition, which is needed in order to apply for the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. CCEI's CDA Certificate programs focus on the six CDA Competency Goals established by The Council and contain the required hours in each of the eight specified content areas. Continuing Education Units (CEUs), college credit through articulation and renewals are also available!

Online Director Programs
CCEI offers several online programs for directors including the CCEI Director's Certificate, the Online National Administrator Credential (NAC) Certificate approved by the National Child Care Association (NCCA), and the Texas Director's Certificate. These programs provide the professional development required for early childhood professionals seeking to further their skills and knowledge in the management of a child care center. Each student receives support from an Education Coach (EC). College credit through articulation and renewals are also available!

Online Early Childhood Credential

The CCEI Early Childhood Credential is designed to give a basic framework of early childhood theory and application through online content-based coursework, reading assignments, practical application exercises, essays, parent interviews, classroom observation and oral and written exams. The instructional units and the 180 hours of coursework cover major topics in early childhood education including the Principles of Child Growth and Development; Safe, Healthy Environments; Social and Emotional Development; Motor, Language, and Cognitive Development; Principles of Child Assessment; Program Management, Families, and Professionalism. The self-paced program allows enrollees up to one year to complete the requirements and can be completed more quickly when concentrated time is devoted. The credential awards 18 IACET CEUs and has been recommended for 12 hours of semester credit in early childhood education by the National College Credit Recommendation Service (National CCRS) who has more than 1,500 schools willing to consider credit, and the Credential is recognized by NAEYC to meet a part of the Alternative Pathways for directors to achieve educational qualifications. These things make the credential a clear pathway toward higher education and raising the knowledge and skills of the early education workforce.
